The Great Smoky Mountains National Park got George Myrick to start bringing his family here for vacations 20 years ago. Then the people and quality of life kept him.
Myrick, who along with his wife Gloria and son Gary own Little River Realty in Townsend and Little River Realty and Cabin Rentals in Wears Valley, thinks he's picked the prime spot for his business and personal life.
"The main thing I like about selling property here is that it's always increasing in value, and people find it to be a good investment, be it commercial land or a log home."
The Myricks opened Little River Realty in Townsend 15 years ago on the corner where Highway 321 turns off to run through Wears Valley and Pigeon Forge. In 2004 they opened a second office in Wears Valley which offers cabin rentals as well as real estate. Our cabin rentals are all in the peaceful Wears Valley area. People love to get away from the traffic and noise and Wears Valley is the perfect place. From the two offices, the company's agents market both commercial and residential property from Maryville to Pigeon Forge. "If it's in the mountains, we cover it."
Most of our real estate business is people coming from out of town or out of state. It's people wanting a second home or people from out of state wanting to retire here due to our beautiful nature and the low tax structure that the state has. Coming from north or south, they find the area here very attractive.
Although he was new to the real estate business, setting up shop in this area didn't pose too many problems. "I had never done this, but I've always been in some form of sales. In southern Mississippi, I was involved in the oil industry, servicing those in the drilling process, until the mid-1980's. We had always vacationed here and in the fall of 1991 we figured that this is where we wanted to be, so we relocated. It's been great ever since."
Myrick credits Little River's continuing success to above-board dealing and good word of mouth. "If you're honest, it'll work for you. Whatever you're selling, you have to sell yourself to the public first. If you do a good job of that here, then you have the best product in the world, the Great Smoky Mountains, to offer."
